About the Autism Challenge initiative

The initiative started in 2000 when a letter was written towards the three main political parties in the UK (Conservative, Liberal Democrats and Labour) with mixed responses.

Then in 2002 one of the first major initiates under Autism Challenge started with Asperger Syndrome Survey. The survey asked questions about how their effects them and show happy they are with the support related services they receive. The survey was originally for the West Midlands region and then was expanded to other parts of mainland Britain including East Midlands, London & the home counties, East Anglia, the south coast and Central Scotland. It was supported by selected autism charities around the country.  In 2003 and 2004 The summary for the findings was distributed around the West Midlands region and was presented the autism charities who took part of survey round Britain. The survey findings was available to view online websites from autism wets midlands and Autism Cymru in Wales (AWARES)

During a similar time period the survey was being developed a visual art project was created. Entitled

Brighter Future and highlights the visual interpretation a person of autism and Asperger Syndrome experiences.

One design from the Brighter Future project was featured on various publications. The main title design Brighter Future was featured on special publication from National Autistic Society as part of their 40th Anniversary celebrations. The design Confusion was featured on front cover of an annual report for the charity autism west midlands in 2006.

During 2004 and 2006 I took part in autism related conferences at the NEC near Birmingham and in Somerset. At both locations I presented the findings from The Asperger Syndrome Survey and the

Brighter Future project.

Elements from Autism Challenge initiative was presented as part of exhibition display. In 2005 The visual art project Brighter Future was on display at the University of Birmingham as part of Autism Awareness Week. Both projects Brighter Future and The Asperger Syndrome Survey was on display as part of the Autscape conference in Somerset.

In 2006 Autism Challenge initiative became online for the first time with its own devoted webpage.

In 2009 a visual art project was launched online, it is was call "Stop the freaks and the clown attitude" highlighting examples of intolerance and the negative certain people face. This project was created in conjunction with special campaign designs when the first ever World Autism Awareness Day was launched on April 2nd 2009. This was originally exclusively shown online via my personal facebook page and only my social networking friends could access the project.  I did receive a variety of positive and constructive responses. This project was originally focused related to people with autism under the autism challenge banner. However because certain people who did not have autism also responded they also related to some of issued featured.

From of the feedback from the "Stop the Freaks.." project a decision was made to evolve the autism challenge initiative to cover more variety of people who also covers difficulties invisibly leading to various life obstacles. The lead to the creation of the Differences initiative. As part of the plan the "Differences" website be created and autism challenge to part of it. So in 2011 autism challenge moved its online content and become an important part of the Differences Website.

From 2011, autism awareness projects was featured with an ongoing series of projects part of "Differences Awareness Series" linked to key awareness events. During World Autism Awareness Day in 2011 and 2013 specialised content and featured was developed. This includes a designer presentation showing statistics of autism in the UK & Worldwide also a designer quote from the United Nations for World Autism Awareness Day. In additional written insights on specific issues are also featured.

In 2012 A visual art project was developed to highlight examples of obstacles and boundary a person with autism experiences regarding being in the receiving end intolerance, bullying and disrespect. It also highlights how differently they are treated from everybody else and the side effects and consequences when an autistic person faces too much intolerance and prejudice. It is called "Don't Demonise people with autism".

Then during 2013 a ongoing creative campaign designed to challenge the conventions on autism awareness and to move on from the traditional issues which tend to repeated annually. It is called Moving Forwards and it is presented in poster format which features blue jigsaw shapes in a more positive and functional way. An example of the Moving forwards project was featured on a special designed mug presentation to students, staff and lectures at University of Birmingham for World Autism awareness day in 2014.

The Moving Forwards project has expanded in 2014 with a "sense of Value" creative campaign.

On its 15th Year the Autism Challange awareness project in 2015 was evolved and rebranded as Differences & Autism Challenge and become connected with the initiative Plus Value Awareness. A series of projects to encourage the general public and society as a whole to get involved. Also to develop products and services which shape a strategy to promote a better sense of value towards independent young people and adults with invisible difficulties. Major structure changes occurred in 2016 with Differences & Autism Challenge along with Plus Value Awareness is becomes part of a parent identity Plus Value Fusion as presented as portfolio of social aim services & products for business, communities & the rest of society. As part of creating Plus Value Enterprise, a new family of Differences & Autism Challenge services are being developed some are in conjunction with Plus Value Awareness.

Autism Challenge, an initiative to challenge awareness and attitude towards autism and asperger syndrome.

The aim is to go beyond awareness and to challenge the society’s attitude. Other than a newsletter devoted for people with autism, online chatrooms and blogs, there is little opportunity for people with AS, to have a voice. Any viewpoints or opinions tend to come from professionals, academics and parents. I thought that it is important that all people with A.S have a say on what affects their lives. The main message of the Autism Challenge is people with Autism and Asperger Syndrome have their own feeling expressions and opinions, embrace and do not underestimate.
